El Yunque National Forest, Puerto Rico
My main to-do item on my list while visiting Puerto Rico was to go to El Yunque National Forest. It is the only tropical rain forest in the U.S. National Forest system. My plan was to camp in the forest for two nights and hike the tall mountains and see the waterfalls. I loved the lushness and greenness of the rain forest. Although it does rain often (it is a RAIN forest after all) it doesn't seem to really hinder any outdoor activities. It is also cooler there and you (and your clothes) don't seem to get completely dry. I ended up just sleeping in my rental car instead of setting up the tent since it would have been soaked from the rain and would never get a chance to dry out!
Yokahu Observation Tower
View of Los Picachos Peak from the top of the tower. El Yunque Peak is hidden in clouds
Mt Britton Trail was paved like this the whole way
Mt Britton Tower, built 1935
Hiking up to El Yunque and Los Pichachos Peaks. No views from the top due to being in a cloud forest!
Lizards everywhere in PR
Rain Forest is always wet
These shelters are great for rest stops along the trail as well as getting out of the rain during the constant showers. It is a RAIN forest after all.
Loved these lush trails
La Mina Waterfall
After El Yunque I headed back to San Juan where I toured the old fort, Castillo San Felipe del Morro.
Sun Rise at the coast
Adiós Puerto Rico!
