Grewingk Glacier, Alaska

This past Friday at 1PM we got a call in the office for Simyra and myself to be at a hangar at 3PM.  I got butterflies; I was about to do something I have never done before. I put my rainpants on, wrapped a scarf around my neck, and grabbed both of my cameras. I was about to check something off my to-do list.
My first helicopter ride!

Mike at Pathfinder Aviation invited us to go up for a tour so we can send our guests his way.  We flew out over the spit and across Kachemak Bay. I felt like I was in a toy machine, and I was surprised at how fast we moved (I guess compared to a small bush plane). I wasn't talking in my headset because I was speechless. Cruising over snow covered mountains, spotting tracks in the snow, and then the big finale...we flew over Grewingk Glacier.  We circled it and flew over the frozen lake at the terminus. I had been in this area only once before during my first summer here, when I hiked up to the glacier during the fall. It was magical.

To top it off we landed on the glacier!

On the glacier!
Simyra and I were like kids in a candy store! We ran around playing, but with cautiousness of our surroundings. The glacier is covered in snow so we didn't need crampons (looking forward to using mine in the near future). Most of the ice was chipped like in a ice machine, and I would kick it up like sand on the beach. In other spots there was soft snow that we would sink into and so we turned around without going further. Also being wary not to go close to any cracks because you can't see what's under the snow. We made snow angels, threw ice in the air, and even did yoga poses.
