New River Gorge National Park
I visited the newest national park (as of December 2020) on the way back South on my road trip. I didn’t know what to expect and thought this might be another one of those “drive by” national parks, but after a trip to the visitor center I got a map and a recommendation of a couple of trails to check out. I hiked the Endless Wall Trail where I saw the gorge and some climbers. I drove down Fayette Station Road and was rewarded with a spectacular view of the longest steel arch bridge in the Western Hemisphere towering in at 876ft tall. Next I rushed over to hike the Long Point Trail before the sun set. The view of the bridge from Long Point is astounding but my pictures don’t do it justice since later in the day the shadow of the gorge covered the bridge. And with those two trails under my belt I felt as though I got to see the park. That night I car camped in a free campground in the park.
