Across Kachemak Bay
On my second day off last week, Simyra and I made a trip across the bay to go kayaking. I had been wanting to do that for the past several summers but never had the chance. Thursday had the promises of a great day on the water, it was partly cloudy and semi warm. First we took a 30 minute water taxi from Homer across the bay to Seaside Adventures.
Once there they suited us up and put Simyra and I in a double kayak. A family joined our group and we shoved off into the water.
As we were kayaking, a group of Harbour Porpoises swam by us. We could hear their breathing first when they breached then we would turn to see their backs above the water. They surrounded us for about 20 minutes and it was neat to see them so close!
We stopped for lunch on a small island and were treated to a homemade soup consisting of plants and herbs that we harvested from on that island. Wild parsley, goosetongue greens, and even some seaweed that we collected in the water. Dorla added some salmon to the soup and paired it with fresh sourdough bread. It was a great meal!
I got to explore an area I haven't been to before and see things I had never seen, so I think it was a very successful trip!
